“Be Wise as Serpents”: What Jesus Taught About Navigating a Broken System

The “They Lied To You” Series — Be Free University

“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”

— Matthew 10:16 (NIV)

“The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.”

— Luke 16:8 (NIV)

Freedom Fighter, we need to have a conversation that most churches avoid.

Jesus talked about money. A lot.

He talked about money more than He talked about heaven and hell combined. He told more parables about finances than about prayer. And in some of His most surprising teachings, He didn’t just talk about generosity and giving — He talked about strategy, shrewdness, and navigating broken systems.

Most preachers skip these passages. They make people uncomfortable. Because Jesus didn’t just say “trust God and it’ll work out.” He said: “Be wise as serpents.” Understand the game. Know the system. Navigate it with intelligence.

That’s not prosperity gospel. That’s Jesus Christ telling you to learn Owner’s Arithmetic.

Matthew 10:16: The Most Overlooked Financial Verse

When Jesus sent out His disciples, He didn’t send them naive. He said: “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.”

Stop there. Jesus acknowledged that the system is hostile. He didn’t pretend the world was fair. He didn’t say “just have faith and the wolves won’t touch you.” He said: you are sheep, they are wolves, and I am sending you into their territory.

Then He gave them the strategy: “Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”

Two qualities. Not one. Two. Shrewdness AND innocence. Strategy AND integrity. Knowledge of the system AND purity of heart.

The Church has historically focused on the dove part. Be gentle. Be kind. Be meek. Be innocent. And those are beautiful qualities. But Jesus said you need both. Innocence without shrewdness makes you prey. Shrewdness without innocence makes you a predator. The Kingdom combination is strategic wisdom with a pure heart.

When it comes to your finances, this means: understand how the system works, navigate it with intelligence, but never exploit others in the process. That’s the Be Free University model. That’s Owner’s Arithmetic with a Kingdom heart.

Luke 16: The Parable Nobody Preaches

Luke 16 contains what I believe is the most uncomfortable financial parable Jesus ever told. And it’s uncomfortable because Jesus praised a dishonest man’s strategy.

Here’s the story. A manager is about to be fired. He knows he’s losing his position. So before he leaves, he goes to his master’s debtors and reduces their debts — making friends and allies for his future. He uses the system’s own resources to build relationships that would support him later.

And Jesus’s response? “The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly.”

Then Jesus dropped the bombshell in verse 8: “For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.”

Read that again. Jesus is saying: the world’s people are smarter about money than God’s people. The system’s players understand strategy, leverage, and positioning better than the Church does.

And that grieves the heart of God. Not because He wants you to be dishonest. But because He gave you a brain, and the system is outthinking you.

What Jesus Was Really Teaching

Jesus was not endorsing dishonesty. He was endorsing strategic thinking. He was saying: look at how shrewd the world is about money — now imagine if God’s people applied that same level of intelligence, strategy, and forethought with righteous intentions.

Here are the financial principles Jesus embedded in these two passages:

Lesson #1: Know the System You’re Operating In

The shrewd manager understood his master’s system. He knew the debts, the debtors, and the dynamics. He didn’t operate in ignorance. You cannot navigate a system you don’t understand. This is why Be Free University starts with Matrix Math education — you have to see the system before you can beat the system.

Lesson #2: Use the System’s Tools Strategically

The manager used his master’s own resources to create a better future. He didn’t wait for permission. He didn’t ask for a miracle. He acted strategically with what was available. In the same way, the financial system has tools — tax codes, credit structures, insurance products, investment vehicles — that can be used strategically to build wealth instead of extract it. Owner’s Arithmetic uses the system’s own tools for your benefit.

Lesson #3: Think Long-Term, Not Just Present

The manager didn’t just react to his crisis. He planned for his future. He made decisions today that would benefit him tomorrow. Most people make financial decisions based on this month’s bills. Freedom Fighters make decisions based on next year’s position. That’s the difference between Slave Arithmetic and Owner’s Arithmetic.

Lesson #4: Relationships Are Assets

The manager invested in people. He reduced debts to create allies. In Kingdom economics, your relationships are your greatest assets. Your network, your community, your Free Nation — these are not just social connections. They are economic partners in building the Land of More Than Enough.

Lesson #5: God Expects You to Be Strategic

Jesus didn’t tell this parable so you could nod politely and forget it. He told it as a rebuke to God’s people who refuse to think strategically about money. If the dishonest manager can be shrewd for selfish purposes, how much more should the children of light be shrewd for Kingdom purposes?

Jesus Understood Systems

When you read the Gospels with financial eyes, you see a Jesus who was deeply aware of economic systems.

He knew the tax system — He told Peter to find a coin in a fish’s mouth to pay the temple tax (Matthew 17:27). Strategic navigation, not blind compliance.

He knew the lending system — He told the Parable of the Talents, where the master rebuked the servant who didn’t even earn interest at the bank (Matthew 25:27). God expects financial multiplication.

He knew the labor system — He told the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, where the last hired received the same as the first (Matthew 20). The Kingdom’s economy doesn’t follow the world’s rules.

He knew the temple system — He overturned the money changers’ tables because they turned God’s house into a den of exploitation (Matthew 21:12-13). Jesus opposed extractive financial systems.

Jesus was not financially naive. He was financially prophetic. He saw the systems, understood the systems, and taught His followers how to operate within them without being consumed by them.

Owner’s Arithmetic Is Biblical

Everything Be Free University teaches has roots in what Jesus taught:

Jesus said “be wise as serpents” — BFU teaches you to understand Matrix Math.

Jesus praised strategic thinking — BFU teaches Owner’s Arithmetic.

Jesus rebuked the man who buried his talent — BFU teaches multiplication, not hoarding.

Jesus overturned exploitative systems — BFU helps you escape them.

Owner’s Arithmetic is not worldly wisdom dressed up in scripture. It is scriptural wisdom applied to a worldly system. There’s a difference. We’re not learning from the world. We’re applying what Jesus taught to the world we live in.

The Serpent’s Wisdom Without the Serpent’s Nature

Here’s the balance Jesus called for. The serpent is wise. It’s calculating. It’s strategic. It understands its environment. It positions itself carefully. It doesn’t waste energy. It doesn’t expose itself unnecessarily.

But the dove is pure. It’s gentle. It doesn’t harm others. It operates with integrity. It serves peace.

Be Free University teaches serpent wisdom with a dove heart.

We teach you to understand taxes — not to cheat, but to stop overpaying. We teach you to understand debt structures — not to exploit, but to stop being exploited. We teach you to understand investment vehicles — not to hoard, but to build wealth that blesses your family and community.

The financial system is wolves. You are sheep. But you’re sheep with a Shepherd who gave you the intelligence to navigate the wolves’ territory.

Stop Being the Foolish Servant

In Matthew 25, the servant who buried his talent was not punished for being dishonest. He was punished for being afraid and passive. He said, “I knew you were a hard man, so I hid the money in the ground.”

The master’s response was fierce: “You wicked, lazy servant!” And then the most important line: “You should have at least put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.”

God expects you to be strategic with resources. Not reckless. Not greedy. Strategic. Multiplication is the expectation. And burying your talent in a savings account earning 0.01% is the modern equivalent of burying it in the ground.

The Freedom Framework is how you put God’s resources to work — strategically, wisely, and with a servant’s heart.

Your Strategic Assignment

Freedom Fighter, Jesus has given you permission to be smart about money. Not just faithful. Not just generous. Not just prayerful. Smart. Strategic. Shrewd. Wise as a serpent.

The world’s system is counting on God’s people remaining financially naive. It profits from your ignorance. It exploits your passivity. It depends on you being all dove and no serpent.

But Jesus said both. And Be Free University teaches both.

It’s time to stop burying your talent. It’s time to stop letting the wolves feast on your paycheck. It’s time to be wise as serpents, innocent as doves, and strategic as owners.
